The same forces hit every insurer — age, medical inflation and claims — and the renewal quote is not automatically the best price AXA Health could offer you.

What actually happens

An AXA Health renewal rises for reasons that are mostly structural rather than personal. Premiums are set by age, so each birthday lifts the base rate, and the increase steepens as you move into an older pricing band. Medical inflation compounds it: the price of the private treatment the policy pays for rises faster than everyday costs, and the book is repriced accordingly.

Your own year matters too. If you claimed, some plans step you down a no-claims discount scale, and a benefit change — a wider hospital list, a higher out-patient limit — carries a cost even when you did not ask for it. A joining discount that has run its course can also make the price rise without any change in risk.

It is worth knowing that private medical insurance sits outside the FCA loyalty-penalty rules that apply to home and motor cover. AXA Health can price a renewal above what it would quote a new customer for the same policy, so the renewal number is a starting point for a conversation, not a fixed fact.

Ask for a plain breakdown of the increase and whether a slightly different excess or hospital list holds the price down. Then price the same cover with other insurers on a switch basis that keeps your existing conditions recognised, so you are comparing genuinely like with like.

Questions to put to the insurer or broker

  • Can you show me what is driving the increase line by line?
  • Would raising the excess or narrowing the hospital list keep my premium closer to last year's?
  • What would equivalent cover cost elsewhere if I switch without a fresh medical declaration?

What a switch cannot change

Switching insurer or adjusting cover changes the price, not your medical history. A condition you already have stays excluded when you move — carried across as it stands on continued personal medical exclusions, re-declared under full medical underwriting, or parked under a fresh moratorium. Chronic conditions are excluded by every insurer whose wording we hold, and renewal terms change each year, so read the document you are actually offered before you commit.
