Which insurers document the strongest dental and optical cover
Of the 4 insurers whose dental and optical cover wording we hold, Aviva and AXA Health include dental and optical cover in the plan, with a stated limit — the strongest position on this benefit in our set. That is a fact about the documents, not a recommendation: the right policy for you depends on far more than one benefit.
| Insurer | Position | What the document says |
|---|---|---|
| Aviva | In the plan, capped | Dental and optical sit in a separate benefit group, and claiming on them does not reduce the no-claim discount. Accidental dental injury is covered up to £600. |
| AXA Health | In the plan, capped | Optician cover pays 80% of prescribed glasses and contact lenses up to £200 a year, and is exempt from the pre-existing condition restrictions. |
| Bupa | Add-on | Dental is a named add-on (Dental Cover 20) with its own per-year maximums on the membership certificate, and it excludes pre-existing conditions and orthodontics. |
| The Exeter | Restricted | Treatment by a GP, optician, dentist or orthodontist is excluded outright — there is no dental or optical add-on. |
What makes dental and optical cover strong
On dental and optical cover, the wording that matters is whether the benefit sits in the core plan or an add-on, whether there is a cap, and whether a referral is needed before you can claim. A plan that includes it with no limit is worth more than one that names it but caps it low — which is why the fact that two policies both "cover" dental and optical cover tells you very little on its own.
How to weigh it for you
The strongest wording on dental and optical cover is not automatically the right policy. A plan that leads on it may cost more, carry a narrower hospital list, or cap something else you need. Weigh dental and optical cover against the rest of the cover and the price rather than choosing on one line. This page reports what the documents say; it is not a personal recommendation — an FCA-authorised broker can advise for your circumstances.
