Around £15,000 at the hospitals publishing prices, with robotic assistance adding roughly £2,300.

What the policy documents actually say

Spire Manchester lists a knee replacement from £15,112, and a robotic-assisted knee replacement from £17,426 — the single most expensive treatment on its published list. Those are package prices covering the procedure and an agreed stay; the initial consultation is billed separately and shown separately on the hospital's own price table.

The spread across hospitals is wide enough to be worth checking rather than assuming. Prices vary with what the package includes — length of stay, implants, follow-up — and with local theatre and consultant costs, not with clinical quality.

For comparison against the rest of a hospital's list: Spire Manchester's published prices run from £1,677 to £17,426 with a median of £7,215, so a knee replacement sits at the top end of what private hospitals routinely price.

Financing is offered alongside, and the illustration tables on those pages are consumer loan examples with a deposit and an APR rather than treatment prices. They are easy to mistake for the cost of the procedure.

If you are pricing this because your knee already hurts, insurance is not the route — see below.

Questions to put to the insurer or broker

  • What exactly does the package price include?
  • Is the initial consultation extra?
  • What happens to the price if I need a longer stay?

The limit behind every answer here

None of this reaches a condition you already have. Cover is written for problems that arise after it starts, so anything you have symptoms of when you apply is excluded — permanently under full medical underwriting, or until a symptom-free period has passed under a moratorium. Chronic conditions are excluded by every insurer whose wording we hold. Figures quoted come from current policy documents and change at renewal, so check the document you are actually offered.
