Expat Health Insurance in Egypt for UK Citizens

A limited public system, top private hospitals in Cairo, and why evacuation cover matters

Written by Rachael and James · Last reviewed September 2026

Egypt has a large but underfunded public health system, and the quality of state care varies widely. Expats and wealthier Egyptians turn to private hospitals in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria, and to international insurance for anything serious or for treatment abroad.

If you are a UK national living in Egypt — whether in Cairo, on the Red Sea coast at Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, or working in the energy sector — international private medical insurance gives you reliable access to the best private facilities and the option of evacuation or treatment overseas.

Healthcare in Egypt: how the system works

Public system: Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS).

Egypt is phasing in a new Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS) to replace a fragmented setup previously run through the Health Insurance Organization. The reform is being rolled out governorate by governorate over many years and is aimed primarily at Egyptian citizens. Public hospitals remain underfunded, so those who can afford it use the private sector.

As a foreign resident you generally cannot rely on the emerging public insurance system, which is designed for Egyptians, and public hospital standards are inconsistent. Your UK domestic health policy will not cover you as a resident of Egypt. In practice expats use private hospitals and pay directly or, far more sensibly, hold international private medical insurance.

Why British expats take out private cover

Private treatment in Egypt is affordable by Western standards, but the best hospitals are concentrated in Cairo and a few other cities, and standards elsewhere can be limited. IPMI matters here because it buys access to the top private facilities, direct billing rather than upfront cash payment, and — importantly — medical evacuation or treatment abroad if a condition cannot be treated locally.

What expat health insurance costs in Egypt

Out-of-pocket private care in Egypt is inexpensive compared with the UK, and consultations or minor treatment can be paid for in cash. For anything major, though, costs mount, and international insurance is the usual route for expats who want comprehensive cover including evacuation. Premiums depend on age, medical history and whether your plan covers just the region or worldwide.

Good to know before you move

  • The new UHIS is being introduced in phases and is aimed mainly at Egyptian citizens.
  • The best private hospitals are concentrated in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria.
  • A UK GHIC or EHIC gives no cover in Egypt.
  • Evacuation cover is valuable if you live on the Red Sea coast or in Upper Egypt.

Private hospitals and where Britons settle

A sizeable British community lives in Egypt, spread between Cairo and the Red Sea resort towns, though exact numbers are hard to pin down.

Leading private hospitals include As-Salam International, Cleopatra Hospital and Dar Al Fouad, mostly in and around Cairo and Giza.

Popular with British expats: Cairo, Alexandria, Giza, Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh.

How a UK broker helps expats in Egypt

International private medical insurance is a specialist market, and the right policy depends on your visa, your age, your medical history and how much time you spend outside Egypt. A UK-based specialist broker can compare the international insurers available through its service, check that a policy meets any local or visa requirement, and explain what is — and is not — covered before you commit.

A broker can compare only the insurers and policies available through its service, and may receive commission or charge a fee. Ask for the insurer panel, the remuneration disclosure and the total price. Requesting a quote is free and puts you under no obligation to buy.

Expat health insurance in Egypt: FAQs

Can expats use public healthcare in Egypt?

Egypt's public system is underfunded and its new Universal Health Insurance System is aimed mainly at Egyptian citizens, so expats rarely rely on state care for anything serious. Most British residents use private hospitals and hold international insurance.

Does Egypt require foreigners to have health insurance?

Egypt has moved towards requiring some foreign residents to hold or pay into health insurance when obtaining or renewing residency, but the details and enforcement have been changing. Check the current requirement for your residency category with the relevant Egyptian authorities, and hold comprehensive private cover regardless.

Will my UK health insurance cover me in Egypt?

No. A UK domestic policy is built for UK residents and will not cover you while you live in Egypt, and a UK GHIC gives no cover there either. You will need an international private medical insurance plan.

Why is medical evacuation cover important in Egypt?

Top private hospitals are concentrated in Cairo and a few cities, so if you live on the Red Sea coast or in Upper Egypt you may be far from advanced care. Evacuation cover pays to move you to a suitable hospital, or abroad, when a condition cannot be treated locally.

How much does expat health insurance in Egypt cost?

Premiums vary with your age, medical history and whether you choose regional or worldwide cover, but international plans for Egypt are generally mid-range compared with high-cost destinations like the US. Paying cash for minor private treatment is cheap, but insurance is what protects you against major bills and evacuation costs.
