A broker cannot make an excluded condition covered, but it can find the insurer and underwriting basis that treat your history most favourably.
How it works in practice
Start with the hard limit, because no broker can move it: private medical insurance does not cover a condition you already have. Anything you have symptoms of when you apply is pre-existing and excluded, and that is set by underwriting, not by who arranges the policy. A broker that promises otherwise is one to walk away from.
Within that limit, though, insurers differ a lot in how they handle history — which conditions they look back on, for how long, and whether they use moratorium or full medical underwriting. A broker who knows those differences can steer you to the insurer whose rules are kindest to your particular situation, which genuinely matters when you have a medical past.
A broker is also useful for continuity. If you already have cover and want to switch, they can arrange the move on continued personal medical exclusions so your existing terms carry across, rather than a fresh policy re-excluding everything or resetting the clock.
So the value is real but bounded: a broker matches you to the least-restrictive terms and protects the cover you have, rather than overriding the underwriting that no intermediary controls.
Questions to put to the insurer or broker
- Which insurer handles my particular condition most favourably?
- Should I take moratorium or full medical underwriting given my history?
- If I switch, can you keep my existing conditions covered?

How this site fits in
This explains how UK private health insurance brokers work in general. Health Insurance UK is not itself a broker and is not FCA-authorised; when you request a quote we introduce you to one selected FCA-authorised broker, which is responsible for any regulated advice, and we may be paid for the introduction. Always check any firm on the FCA Financial Services Register before you act, and remember a broker cannot cover a condition you already have — that is set by underwriting, not by who arranges the policy.
